All Fertilizers are Toxic…Aren’t they?

Jim Halbeisen and Chris Kohls discuss the article

When I first heard about Growers Mineral Solution, I was utterly amazed to find out that it was approved for animal nutrition. How could that be? Aren’t all fertilizers toxic?

Most fertilizers are toxic to humans and animals because they contain heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) from phosphorus rock. Most Phosphorus rock naturally has heavy metal content and the cost to remove the metals is expensive. The most common way of poisoning and intake of heavy metals is daily consumption of contaminated food. Along with being one of the most significant global environmental contamination problems in soil and ground water.

On March 26, 2024, we witnessed the Francis Scott Key bridge collapse in Baltimore after the massive 984-foot container ship “Dali” hit the bridge pillar. The accident caused six deaths and a huge problem for the ninth biggest port in United States ($91 billion dollars of product annually). The bridge collapse also causes a nightmare for transportation of fertilizers and other toxic materials. Twenty years ago, Growers Mineral ran into a similar problem with a bridge issue in Baltimore. The main harbor bridge was shut down and the only way across the harbor was the tunnel. Our Growers Mineral truck driver Doug Malpas was delivering an order and had to use the tunnel. Arriving at the tunnel entrance his truck was stopped by a law enforcement officer who refused to let the truck proceed because he was carrying fertilizer. Afterall, the officer grew up on a farm and knows all fertilizer is toxic.

Doug told the officer that he was carrying Growers Mineral Solution fertilizer, and it was a non-toxic and non-corrosive fertilizer. Not having any luck convincing the officer, Doug requested the officer call in his captain to review the situation. When the captain arrived and questioned Doug about the load he was carrying, Doug reassured the captain that Growers Mineral fertilizer is non-toxic and safe. Again, the officer chimed in, “that he grew up on a farm and knows firsthand that all fertilizers are toxic.” After more back and forth and not making any progress, Doug, frustrated and ready to prove his point finally, climbed up on the truck tank and opened the hatch door. stuck his hand in the Growers Mineral Solution fertilizer and licked his Growers covered fingers. Stunned and not sure what he just witnessed, the captain then replied, “if he is willing to lick the product it must not be toxic”! Let him through.

For almost seventy years Growers Mineral Solution has produced a non-toxic, non-corrosive 10-20-10 fertilizer in solution with micronutrients. FDA Registered as animal phosphorus feed source, Federal and States government inspectors are required to ensure the purity and safety of Growers Mineral Solution product.
